- log into osm.org as

and tell the browser to never remember credentials on this page (so that we can visibly type in the credentials when recording the video below and so we aren't propted whether to save them again)- log out of osm.org
- log in as an administrator to osmaxx.hsr.ch
- delete user

Video 1: Using the OSMaxx website and service
Scene 0: Log in to OSMaxx for the first time (with an existing OpenStreetMap account)
Start with a browser open on a blank page (about:blank)
- type into address bar:
osmaxx.hsr.ch
and click the "Go" arrow
- dismiss the cookie notice
- in the navigation bar, click the "Login" button
- there, click the "Log in using OpenStreetMap" button
- log in as
geometalab
- if the "read your user preferences" checkbox is not ticked, tick it
- click "grant access"
- enter
geometalab@hsr.ch
and click "submit"

Show the confirmation email
- click on the confimation link.
Scene 1: Exporting a predefined excerpt (e.g. a country)
We begin were we left off in scene 0:
- in the navigation bar, click on "Existing Excerpt / Country"
- click on "Gaza Strip"
- enter
ecu
into the "Filter by name" input field
- click "Northern_Ecuador"
- click "Ecuador" (in the "Countries & administrative areas" section)
- tick some formats
- open the coordinate system dropdown, hover over the entries, but leave the setting at the default "WGS 84"
- open the detail level dropdown, hover over the entries, but leave the setting at the default "Full detail"
- click "submit"

Scene 2: Define (draw) & export a new excerpt
- click on the "New Excerpt" button in the navigation bar
- zoom in to the "Dreiländereck" at Basel
- using the freehand tool (pentagon icon), draw a shape containing Basel and its suburbs, incl. the EuroAirport
- once finished, edit the shape a bit and "save" it
- delete the shape and "save" the deletion
- use the "Select current extent" feature
- edit the shape a bit and "save" it
- type

into the 'Name' field - select some export formats
- open the coordinate system dropdown, hover over the entries, but leave the setting at the default "WGS 84"
- open the detail level dropdown, hover over the entries, but leave the setting at the default "Full detail"
- click "submit"
Scene 3: Download and OSMaxx data and display it in QGIS

click on "My Exports"

Download the ZIP archive for a GIS format (= not Garmin) from the Basel export from the previous scene

go to the location of the downloaded export and unpack the ZIP archive

in the unpacked file structure, navigate to the QGIS symbology files (
.../symbology/QGIS/
) and double-click theOSMaxx_M1.qgs
file to open it in QGIS -
Wait until the file has been loaded

Video 2: Make adaptions to the Symbology in QGIS
- go to the location of the downloaded "Basel" export and unpack the ZIP archive
- in the unpacked file structure, navigate to the QGIS symbology files (
.../symbology/QGIS/
) and double-click theOSMaxx_M1.qgs
file to open it in QGIS - Wait until the file has been loaded (progress bar reaches right end and starts oscillating). (You don't need to wait until the rendering is complete and the progress bar stops oscillating.)
- Change scale to 1:2500, using the input field at the bottom
- If no housenumbers are in view, pan to an area with housenumbers
- Turn housenumbers off (untick rule in labels for layer
address_p
) - Change the width or color of one of the visible road types.

Video 3: Download and OSMaxx data and display it in ArcGis
- On the OSMaxx website, click on "My Exports"
- Download the ZIP archive for a GIS format (= not Garmin) from the Basel export from video 1
- click on "Additional Downloads"
- Download the ArcGIS master files and for the symbol font
- Install the OSMaxx symbol font in Windows
- Unpack the master files ZIP archive
- go to the location of the downloaded export and unpack the Basel ZIP archive
- Open the MasterMDX file for scale M1 with the Basel data
